Kololo

Kololo is one of the oldest residential areas within Kampala. This can be expressly described as upscale in nature. It is the closest and most centrally located from the Central business district.

Kololo is close to the centre of Kampala, bordered by Naguru to the east, Bukoto to the north, Mulago to the north-west, Makerere to the west, Nakasero to the south-west, and Kibuli to the south. Kololo is in the Kampala Central Division.

There are a variety of high end houses and apartments for rent and sale in this location.

Initially inhabited by the British colonialists, most of the old houses here have a colonial appeal and most of them are on huge one acre gardens.

There are many expatriates residing in Kololo and it’s the most preferred location among 90% of the international community living in Kampala. The prices of property here are undoubtedly high but these are also some of the best homes Kampala has to offer. Notable among these are the residences of most embassies and diplomatic missions, UN and the European Union staff.

Traffic

There is little to no traffic within most of the internal roads in Kololo, however, the commercial streets like the Acacia Avenue(under major expansion as of this posting) do get hectic in the rush hours.
The popular hub of Kisementi housing the likes of Acacia Mall and Cube attracts alot of traffic over the weekend as people from all walks of life flock here for a one-stop shopping & dining experience.

It can take about ten minutes’ drive from Kololo to the central business district in normal traffic conditions while the same drive takes up to an hour during heavy traffic. There are a few public taxis that come to Kololo from tow, with boda boda being the most available public means for the same.

Environment

Kololo is quite hilly at the top with amazing panoramic views of the greater Kampala. In the North western part of the hill, one can easily view Lake Victoria on a clear day from a random balcony.

There is plenty of greenery and lovely mature gardens adorn different residences across the hill. The road network is fully tarmacked with regular maintenance and cleaning in place.

The Kololo airstrip is a landmark in this location that occasionally hosts important national occasions and is historically regarded as the independence grounds. The grounds also serve as a venue for mega concerts, military parades and crusades but this is not a regular occurrence. When it happens, some inconvenience can be expected in terms of traffic jam & noise but it never goes beyond the early night hours.

On the whole, Kololo remains the most organized neighbourhood in central Kampala, making it ideal for jogging, walking pets and even cycling.

Lifestyle

The popular Acacia Avenue (officially John Babiha Avenue) which crosses Kololo boasts a variety of leisure spots i.e bars, restaurants, hotels etc. The Golf Club, Mediterraneo hotel, Protea hotel, hotel Africana, Cantine Divino, Tamarai, Atmosphere lounge & Metroplole hotel are some of the renowned dining & accommodation venues. Illusion club, Riders Lounge, Cielo lounge etc are some of the top bars Kololo has to offer.

The Acacia mall is a destination & upscale shopping centre with some big & international brands in house like Cafesserie, Shoprite, Adidas, Elite Apple store, Aristoc Bookshop, Century Cinemax, all major banks and Telecom centres. This also offers high end serviced office spaces on short & long term basis.

There is a weekly organic market every Saturday at Prunes restaurant along Wampewo Avenue, another of the busy streets in Kololo. This has become popular with the residents of Kololo.

Schools

Kololo has the Lohana Academy & Kabojja Junior, both popular for the local primary curriculum. A similar one, Kampala Parents School is a stone’s throw away at the edge of Naguru with Kololo while the Kampala International School of Uganda(KISU) in Bukoto will cater for most of the international IB curriculum students, in this part of town.

Hospitals & Clinics

There is the renowned Kampala hospital in lower Kololo near the golf course, Aga Khan clinic at Acacia mall rooftop, the new MediPal hospital down Acacia avenue and a couple other modern clinics around Wampewo Avenue. Ruby hospital is a new off Lugogo bypass, near Kololo.
Mulago National Specialised hospital is also within a few minutes’ drive from Kololo and operates round the clock, with a public and private specialised unit
