Nakasero is a hill located in central Kampala, the capital and largest city of Uganda. This area is home to Kampala’s central business district and very important to the politics and economy of Uganda. It also boasts several government offices, including ministries and the Ugandan Parliament.
Nakasero is bordered by Mulago to the north, Makerere to the northwest, Old Kampala to the west, Namirembe and Mengo to the southwest, Nsambya to the south, Kibuli to the south east, and Kololo to the east.
Traffic
There is a lot of traffic during rush hours as most city roads end up in Nakasero and all major public transport is centered here as well with bus stops and taxi parks scattered at the heart of downtown Kampala.
Lifestyle
There are all manner of amenities within Nakasero ranging from shopping malls, hotels, bars, restaurants, gyms etc. Prominent among them are the Kampala Serena hotel(5 star), Sheraton hotel (5 star), Grand Imperial Hotel(5 star), Golden Tulip, Kampala Casino, Pearl of Africa Hotel(5 star), Kampala Club, the popular Nakasero fresh foods market and others.
Environment
Most of this hill is a commercial zone comprising storeyed office and business buildings, as well as some high-end residential properties, on the uppermost part of the hill, where the presidential state house is located.
The lower part of the hill is ever busy and vibrant with all manner of commercial activity from hawkers, boutique shops, street vendors, wholesale and retail shops, textile merchants and dealers in all sorts of electronics.
The downtown area is very popular as a shopping destination for all Ugandans from all parts of the country, with multiple arcades and the popular Owino market.
The constitutional square is a green patch of grass at the heart of town where one can go to catch a breather.
Schools
The area has a few local schools with the most prominent being Nakasero Primary school and Buganda Road Primary School.
Hospitals & Clinics
Nakasero Hospital is the most popular private hospital in the area. Mulago National Referral Hospital lies a few minutes away, at the edge of Nakasero.
